Maria Guadalupe Santiago Sánchez and Cecilia, her sister, are from the town of San Antonio Castillo Valance, known for its beautiful, embroidered crafts. Maria and Cecilia sew shirts, dresses, and bags and decorate them with beautiful embroidery. Some pieces are so detailed and elaborate that they take up to three months to complete. Most of their designs feature flowers and small figures inspired by the agriculture of their town and traditional indigenous designs. Two main types of needlework are present in their pieces; one is a lace pattern into which they sew small figures or other decorations, while the other uses the colors of the thread to form flowers and leaves. The sisters learned this intricate craft from elders in their family and will continue to hand down their knowledge to the next generation.
