“We put a lot of heart into our music and our dance,” says Bibiana Perez Bautista, a member of the group Raices. Since its beginning in 2001, Raices has been making music and dance in the traditional jarocho style from the region of Veracruz. The group is comprised of 5-9 members, most of whom are part of one very talented family.
Using traditional instruments such as the jarana (similar to the ukulele), the marimbol (marimba) and the requinto (a type of small guitar), Raices’ upbeat, acoustic instrumentals intertwine with their strong, clear voices in an original combination of tradition and creativity. With their music, they incorporate folkloric dance that adds percussion with its rhythmic stomps. Raices performs both traditional and original songs and will often adapt the lyrics of existing songs. It is important to them that their lyrics convey a message, and they often write about the community and the injustices that occur against human beings.
Raices has recorded three albums so far and can be seen performing at restaurants, festivals, and private events in and around Oaxaca City. Raices’ joyous performances make it evident that “as a group, what is most important is the family.” Raices is true to its name, which translates to “roots,” in the authenticity and family heritage that shines through their work.
