Juan Hernandez Arenas

Juan Hernandez Arenas began learning the technique of “fibra suave” from his parents at just seven years of age. Using brightly colored strips of plastic and palm fibers, Juan hand-weaves bags, wallets, baskets, fans, and much more.

What is most important about his work, Juan explains, is the tradition from which it comes. His artesania (product) is a reflection of the Mixtec heritage that has flowed through his family’s ancestry. Following his parents’ footsteps, Juan has already begun to teach his own children the “fibra suave” technique.

Aided by his contagious smile and warm demeanor, Juan sells his wares in the markets of Oaxaca City on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays. His vibrant, expertly-crafted products are lightweight, easy to pack and carry, and most importantly, crafted with respect to generations of artisan tradition.
